The lignum vitae is Jamaica’s national flower but the tree has many health benefits that may be unknown to some.Scientifically classified as Guaiacum, lignum vitae extract is useful for skin disorders, respiratory complaints and syphilis.
The resin from the tree is also good to treat dry mouth, thirst and to excite warmth in the stomach. It also stimulates body heat and promotes circulation.
It can also be used to treat rheumatism and toothaches.
Steeping the leaves of the tree to make a tea can also be used to combat high blood pressure, tonsillitis and gout.
As a mouthwash, it is used to eliminate bacteria.
The tea also rids the body of mucus and cleans the bowels.
It also stimulates circulation and purification of blood.
 
A tea made from flowers is used to cure bronchitis, asthma, colds, coughs, flu and congestion.
Pain in the joints can be eased by using an extract from wood chips by placing it in alcohol and boiling it. Then massage the troubled body part with the liniment to decrease swelling, pain and redness related to arthritis.
A tea made from the wood of the lignum vitae is also used as a treatment for gastric ulcers and gastritis.
You can also mix the crushed leaves of the lignum vitae with coconut oil to cure blisters, skin sores, abscesses and boils.
In 2014, Jamaican scientist Dr Henry Lowe and his team of researchers reported that they had discovered potent bio-activity against the deadly HIV in extracts taken from the tree. Research is still ongoing in that regard.
You know it as the national flower but the lignum vitae has much to offer in terms of health and wellness.
