One million stopover visitors recorded by early May

The tourism figures continue its upward trend as during the second week of May the island welcomed a record one million stopover visitors to the country since the start of the year, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has revealed.
This came as the sector was still celebrating a record 1.7 million combined cruise and stopover visitor arrivals to the island at the end of April.

The tourism minister also reported that the sector has raked in some US$1 billion since the start of the year.

"Last week we welcomed one million stopover arrivals. Remember, at the end of April we had 1.7 million overall-that is cruise and stopover. But we hadn't hit the million yet for stopovers. But now that has happened for the first time within the first five months of the year and we have earned over a US$1billion in the process,” Bartlett stated.

He expressed that there is a direct correlation to the increase in arrivals and earnings.

He was speaking at the All Island Chambers of Commerce quarterly luncheon forum at the S Hotel in Montego Bay, St James on Sunday.
