The Old Harbour and Friends Association (OHFA) is a dedicated nonprofit organization established in August 1993 by nine former residents of Old Harbour, St. Catherine, Jamaica, who relocated to New York. Driven by a mission to uplift their hometown community, OHFA focuses on providing financial and material aid, emphasizing education and healthcare.
Over the years, OHFA has awarded numerous scholarships and grants to students from Old Harbour and surrounding areas, facilitating access to secondary education. The association has donated over 10,000 books, computers, and other educational resources to institutions like the Old Harbour Public Library, Old Harbour High School, and Marlie Mount Primary and Infant School.
In healthcare, OHFA has organized medical missions in collaboration with professionals from New York, offering services such as dental and vision care to over 4,000 residents. The association has also provided medical equipment, including hospital beds and wheelchairs, to local healthcare facilities.
Beyond these initiatives, OHFA engages in community development projects, such as refurbishing school facilities and recognizing distinguished citizens for their contributions. The association's efforts are sustained through fundraising events and the support of its approximately 500 members and associates.
With a steadfast commitment to service, OHFA continues to bridge the gap between the Jamaican diaspora and their homeland, fostering a spirit of unity and progress.
